ABOUT STEVEN CALLAHAN

American author best known for his book "Adrift: Seventy-six Days Lost at Sea." The book details his infamous story of surviving on a raft for 76 days after his boat was ruined while sailing in 1982. He has also been a naval architect and holds three US patents.

His father was an architect, so he grew up wanting to do the same thing. He worked on building boats before boarding the Napoleon Solo, which led to the disaster he survived.

His book remained on the New York Times Best Seller list for 36 weeks. He is also the author of "Capsized," a story about four men who were adrift for 119 days at sea.

He married Kathleen Massimin in 1994.

He worked with director Ang Lee to help depict what life on a raft was like for the movie Life of Pi .
