Actress and playback singer in India's Hindi-language films. Her career lasted from 1936 to 1963. She acted in 67 films and sang on 338 songs.
She made her debut as a child actor in Jaddan Bai's film "Madame Fashion" in 1936.
As a tribute to her, her songs are played every year on her birthday by Radio Ceylon, a radio station based in Sri Lanka.
She was from Mumbai, India. She was in a relationship with actor Dev Anand from 1948 - 1951.
One of her childhood friends included Raj Kapoor .
