American impressionist painter best known for his landscape paintings of Indiana. He is considered a legend of midwestern art.
He received formal art training at Waveland Collegiate Institute before continuing on to Asbury College at age sixteen.
He was well-respected enough to receive honorary degrees from Wabash College in 1900 and Indiana University in 1916.
His father Samuel was a saddle maker.
He and John Harick are both noted painters from Indiana.
