Theophilus Oglethorpe
ABOUT THEOPHILUS OGLETHORPE
British soldier and statesman who played a prominent part in the defeat of James, Duke of Monmouth at Sedgemoor. He is the main protagonist in John Whitbourn's 1998 book The Royal Changeling.
His property was confiscated during the British religious conflicts, but then restored.
Due to the monarchy he supported falling from favor twice, his fortunes in life changed drastically.
He had sons named James , Lewis, and Theophilus.
His son, James Oglethorpe , founded the colony of Georgia in the spirit of the same social reforms he advocated at home in England.
