Classical American businessman widely remembered for his writing and eccentricity. He used his success as a businessman to launch an export business to the West Indies and Europe.
At the age of 16 he became a tanner's apprentice. He made his first fortune after the American Revolutionary War.
He exported Bibles to the East Indies and stray cats to Caribbean islands.
He and his wife Elizabeth Frothingham had two children.
His home garden had wooden statues of George Washington and Napoleon Bonaparte .
