He lost his father to a gunshot wound, inflicted by his mother.
He became the first player in major league history to record over 4,000 hits and retired with 4,191.
He divorced twice and lost two of his three sons prematurely.
His career hits record stood for nearly 60 years, until Pete Rose recorded his 4,192nd hit on September 11, 1985.
