He started playing the violin when he was six years old and studied piano with Isidor Philipp at the Paris Conservatory.
He received a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame.
He married Rita Kinel in 1922.
He worked with Judy Garland on the first album of songs featured in The Wizard of Oz from 1939.
