He was raised in Moscow by a Polish nobleman father and a Jewish-born, Christian-convert mother.
He abandoned poetry writing during the 1920s to pursue a career in literary criticism.
He was married to fellow literary figure Nina Berberova.
His literary patron was the author Maxim Gorky .
