Oscar nominee for 1952's Hans Christian Andersen , 1968's Funny Girl, and Willy Wonka & the Chocolate Factory from 1971. He worked on over 100 films, including Jerry Lewis' The Nutty Professor in 1963.
He was an accompanist for singer Helen Morgan and pianist and arranger for the legendary Rudy Vallee .
He was hired in the 1960s by silent-film star Harold Lloyd to rescore Lloyd's old films.
He was born to Yiddish theatre comic Bessie Zwerling.
He orchestrated the original version of Irving Berlin 's "White Christmas" for the film Holiday Inn from 1942.
