Right-handed pitcher whose best major league season came with the Chicago Cubs in 1952: 15 wins, a 2.58 ERA, and a league-leading 0.946 WHIP.

Prior to debuting for the Cubs in 1948, he played for the Texarkana Bears.

His worst year came in 1953, leading the league in losses, earned runs, and home runs surrendered.

He grew up in Marissa, Illinois.

Hall-of-Fame shortstop and first baseman Ernie Banks was his teammate on the Cubs.
