ABOUT WERKNESH KIDANE

Long-distance 5,000 and 10,000-meters runner who competed at the 2000 and 2004 Olympics; she won the gold at the 2003 IAAF World Cross Country Championships.

She achieved her first international title at the 1999 IAAF World Cross Country Championships in the junior race.

She won the silver in the 10,000 meters at the 2003 World Championships in Athletics in Paris, where she placed behind Ejegayehu Dibaba , also a famed Ethiopian runner.

She married fellow Ethiopian long-distance runner and Olympian Gebregziabher Gebremariam.

Her marathon debut came in 2011 at the Boston Marathon, where she was seventh with 2:26:15; she followed this up by competing in the Carlsbad 5000, where she came in behind Tirunesh Dibaba .
