English actor, comedian and film director who appeared in many films during the 1930s. In 1942, he appeared in Go to Blazes and The Goose Steps Out.
He started out training to be an engineer, but quit at age 21 to begin acting.
He also studied astronomy and in 1932, became a Fellow of the Royal Astronomical Society.
He was married to Gladys Perkins from 1907 to 1935 and they had three children together.
He starred with John Mills in the 1942 film, The Black Sheep of Whitehall.
