William Orlando Butler
ABOUT WILLIAM ORLANDO BUTLER
Politician and war hero who is remembered for having served as a Democratic congressman from Kentucky from 1839 to 1843. Throughout the American Civil War, he was a war democrat who favored the Union.
He was a student at Transylvania University, where he graduated in the year 1812.
During the War of 1812, he was present at the Battle of the River Raisin. After the British captured Butler, they sent him to Fort Niagara, where he remained until the British freed him on parole. He returned to Kentucky only to join the American forces that met the British and Indians at the Battle of the Thames in 1813.
He wrote a collection of poems titled The Boatman's Horn, and Other Poems.
He was born in Kentucky.
He ran for political office against Millard Fillmore .
