ABOUT WILLIAM RUSSELL FLINT

Remembered particularly for his watercolor illustrations and paintings of women, this Scottish artist also worked with tempera, oil paints, and prints and was employed for several years as an artist with The Illustrated London News.

During the late 1800s and early 1900s, he worked as a lithographer's apprentice and studied at both Heatherley's Art School and the Royal Institute of Art.

He was the first president of Great Britain's Royal Watercolour Society. He also illustrated a 1912 edition of Geoffrey Chaucer's The Canterbury Tales.

Born and raised in Edinburgh, Scotland, he traveled widely in Spain and ultimately settled in London, England.

He created illustrations for the Savoy Operas, several W.S. Gilbert-written librettos that were set to music by the composer Arthur Sullivan .
