An American novelist, short story writer, playwright, and poet, he is best known for The House of Breath, A Book of Jesus, and Arcadio.
He studied comparative literature at Rice University. He served in the South Pacific during World War II.
His work contains themes of isolation, loneliness, home and family, time, memory, and spirituality.
He was born in Texas. He married actress Doris Roberts (of 'Everybody Loves Raymond' fame) in 1963.
His writing style has been compared to that of Virginia Woolf .
