ABOUT WILLIAM H. HASTIE

Civil rights activist and politician, most remembered as the first Governor of the United States Virgin Islands.

He matriculated -- magna cum laude -- from Amherst College.

He also taught Law at Howard University, where one of his students was future supreme court justice, Thurgood Marshall .

He was born in Knoxville, Tennessee.

He and first lady, Michelle Obama , both studied at Harvard's prestigious law school.
