He attended Uppingham School in England. Before becoming a writer, he worked in banking and advertising. During World War II, he was a firefighter in London.
His first experience writing professionally came as he wrote film scripts following WWII. He used his real-life experiences as material for his writing.
He was born Norman Trevor Sansom. His father was a naval architect named Ernest Brooks Sansom, and his mother's name was Mabel.
He has been compared to Czech author Franz Kafka .
