Journalistic icon and newspaper editor best known for his influential series of articles titled "The Maiden Tribute of Modern Babylon." He is credited with pioneering the way in which media is used to influence public opinion and policy.

He was home-schooled by his father, who taught him the Holy Scriptures and ensured that he was nearly fluent in Latin.

His father was Congregational minister Rev. William Stead.

He and "Macy's" co-owner Isidor Straus both died aboard the Titanic.
