He designed makeup for Gene Kelly , Katharine Hepburn , Judy Garland , and other Hollywood stars.
He grew up in Jacksonville, Florida. He dropped out of school to support his family. He was married to actress Donna Reed .
He received the first-ever Academy Award in the category of makeup for his work on the film "7 Faces of Dr. Lao," which starred Tony Randall .
