The first Korean to fly into space, making South Korea the third country to have a woman as its first space traveler.

She was a researcher and earned her doctorate in biotech systems.

She flew aboard Soyuz TMA-12 in 2008.

She was raised by her parents in Gwangju, South Korea.

She was born in the same country as musical artist Psy .
