Yordan Yovkov

ABOUT YORDAN YOVKOV

A 20th-century Bulgarian writer, he is best known for his 1927 story, Legends of Stara Planina, and for his 1927 play, Inn at Antimovo. Several of his works, including Shibil and Chastinyat Uchitel, were made into films.

He studied law at Sofia University before enlisting in the 41st division during the First Balkan War. His early works focused on village life; his post-war works were decidedly darker-themed.

Several of his works were made into operas by composer Parashkev Hadjiev.

He was born in Zheravna, Bulgaria. A dam in his native country, near the town of Elena, was named after him.

Yovkov served as a border officer during World War I; Rayner Hoff also served in the war, as a member of the British Army.
