Independent filmmaker and screenwriter, most known for her films that focus on LGBT issues and themes like Monique (1991) and
The Cinematic Jazz of Julie Dash (1992).
She obtained her Ph.D. from Northwestern University.
She was once the Department chair of Journalism and Media Studies at Bennett College for Women in Greensboro.
She was once in a domestic partnership for many years.
Like Jaime Newman , she also studied at Northwestern University in Evanston.
